Conférence : l'anglais des mathématiques

Public visé : La conférence de Lucie Steidlova sera proposée à l’ensemble des étudiants et personnels de l’école, et en particulier aux étudiants du Département des langues qui découvrent l’anglais de spécialité (niveau L3), à ceux qui se spécialisent en anglais de spécialité (niveau Master), ainsi, bien sûr, qu’aux étudiants et chercheurs du département de mathématiques.

Abstract

Conférence : "English for Mathematicians: The Phraseology of Deductive Reasoning"

It has now become a widely accepted fact that the writing of academicians is disciplinary specific, and that this should to be reflected in the instruction of university students of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). With this goal in mind, a recent exploratory study (Steidlová, 2022) has investigated the key building blocks of mathematical writing, specifically mathematical research papers. It has indicated
four main functions mathematicians perform in the texts, i.e. constructing a setup, formulating propositions, deductive reasoning, and navigating the reader, and suggested key constructions
employed in realising these functions. Furthering the research, in this paper we focus on the central one of these functions, i.e. deductive reasoning, and provide a detailed account of the phraseology it
entails. We describe the range of constructions typically used, such as those linked with the use of conjunctions since, hence, then, or verbal phrases with we. To make the description of the
constructions relevant to the students of ESP, we show their inner composition and main components, but also their position and integration in the texts. Moreover, the relations between the constructions
are discussed. The paper therefore suggests what could be taken as a basis for a chapter in the syllabus of an ESP course for mathematicians.

Mme Lucie Steidlová, PhD, est chercheuse et professeure d'anglais au département des langues de la faculté de mathématiques et de physique de l'Université Charles (Prague, République Tchèque).
Ayant étudié l'anglais et les mathématiques, elle se spécialise dans l'enseignement de l'anglais pour les mathématiciens. Elle est responsable de l'organisation du programme d'enseignement et de l'examen UNIcert® III, English for Mathematicians, à la faculté.

Lucie a récemment terminé un doctorat sur la phraséologie des articles de recherche en mathématiques et poursuit ses recherches dans ce domaine.
