Abstract

Anthropomorphism is clearly at the heart of today's robotics and AI (artificial intelligence) projects. The artefacts - material or immaterial - resulting from these disciplines, endowed with behaviour and autonomy, or presenting a simulacrum of thought, thus seem to claim the title of almost-human, to use the formula of the philosopher Thierry Hoquet. This raises the question of the forms of strange subjectivities that arise with these singular objects, and of the poetic and fictional potential that they conceal.

Fabien Zocco is an artist who graduated from Le Fresnoy - Studio national des arts contemporains, in 2016. His approach, which combines sculpture, installation and writing, gives rise to forms in which the attributes of the human or the living (language, writing, movement, play, etc.) are now shared and negotiated with the machine.

His presence at ENS Paris-Saclay, as part of a carte blanche offered to the Fresnoy, will be held in two stages: a workshop involving students from the Research and Creation Diploma (ARRC) at Paris-Saclay with student artists from the Fresnoy National Studio; then a research period in which the artist explores different avenues of work in contact with laboratories at the University of Paris-Saclay
The whole is articulated around the above-mentioned themes and questions, favouring a critical approach that the relationship between research and art now imposes.

The restitution of this carte blanche takes the form of an exhibition at the Scène de Recherche, presenting a selection of the artist's works as well as a work in progress of the projects initiated during the work period.

Le Fresnoy - Studio national is a new type of higher art education institution, a centre of excellence of national and international scope. Its pedagogy, mainly based on the production of all kinds of works whose common point is the integration of professional audiovisual techniques, makes it a totally new place of production, experimentation and distribution.
