ARÉco Diploma : research in science for environmental transitions

The aim of the proposed course is to bring together different cultures to address environmental issues.
The "Research Year in Science for Ecological Transitions" diploma offers a knowledge base conferring a very good level in Science for Ecological Transitions which leads learners to the broadest possible knowledge of current scientific data on ecological issues.
Thus, the training allows students to answer the questions :

  • What do scientists tell us?
  • What are the forms of public policy to meet the challenges of the transition?

In order to preserve a high level disciplinary character, the training offers a disciplinary specialisation with an orientation towards ecology. In this sense, the common base is completed by 2 major disciplinary axes which rely on the skills of the school's departments and laboratories: Material and energy flows - interaction with the environment; Human and social sciences for the ecological transition.

Target audience

The ARÉco diploma is offered to students of the Ecole Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay and to all students of various backgrounds (universities, engineering schools, ESR institutions, etc.).

It is a one-year training programme that complements disciplinary expertise with a competence in Sciences for Ecological Transitions, intended for students at Master 1 or Master 2 level.  It is also open to continuing education.

As part of the ENS Paris Saclay diploma, it contributes to the thematic research course in Sciences for ecological transitions. It is positioned in the 3rd year and enables the validation of at least the multidisciplinary and research skills.

Prerequisites

The training programme is open to all students with a minimum of M1 level or equivalent without pre-requisites but with a strong interest in ecological issues and the project to complete their disciplinary training with skills in Science for Ecological Transitions.
Targeted competences

  • Master the fundamental scientific data of contemporary ecological sciences
  • Master the frameworks of action of environmental public policies at different scales
  • Develop autonomous and reflective thinking on the issues of ecological transitions
  • To deepen one's disciplinary knowledge and know-how in the field of sciences for ecological transitions
  • Know how to conduct interdisciplinary work to understand contemporary ecological problems
  • To conduct collaborative work aimed at including the contributions of experimental and social sciences in the design of new public policies.

Post-graduate opportunities

  • Continuation of studies in Master 2 or doctorate.
  • Various positions in research departments for the State, local authorities, associations and/or companies, ranging from the design/implementation of public policies to research projects or participatory action programmes, around ecological projects.

Membership

  • 24 students and normaliens

Organisation of the training course

The year is organised in two semesters.

Semester 1

  • A common base of knowledge
  • Two common Teaching Units (TU): TU1 = Physical Constraints; TU2 = Governing the Environment - Institutions and Instruments
  • A collective interdisciplinary project
  • complementary activities: accompanied reading of the IPCC, the climate mural, etc.
  • Disciplinary specialisation courses to choose from (under development):
  • Matter and energy flows - interaction with the environment
  • Human and Social Sciences for ecological transitions

Semester 2

  • It consists of a disciplinary research course.
  • The course may be completed by the compulsory completion of MOOCs or SPOCs, preferably in the Paris-Saclay area.
