Winner of the 2013 University Prize of the Val-de-Marne General Council

Julie Le Gac has been recognized for her PhD thesis “Glory and woes of the French Expeditionary Force in Italy - November 1942 - July 1944”, which she completed at ENS Cachan.

The Val-de-Marne General Council invites the winners to the 31st higher education and research meeting on Monday, June 17 for the award of the University Prize.

Julie Le Gac, who received the 2012 IRSEM Military History Award last year, is one of the winners of this year's Val-de-Marne General Council University Prize for her doctoral thesis in history, supervised by Professor Olivier Wievorka, Department of Social Sciences, ENS Cachan.

During World War II

“The French Expeditionary Corps (CEF) carrying the tricolor banner on European soil for the first time since the defeat of 1940 was a major gesture for national recovery. The power of the symbol could not overshadow its vicissitudes. This thesis proposes a comprehensive history of the CEF, from the allied landing in North Africa in November 1942 to its withdrawal from Italy in July 1944.”

The University Prize

Created in 1982, the Val-de-Marne General Council's University Prize has been recognizing academic study for thirty years, the oldest expression of support for research in the département.

Students must either have carried out their research at a higher education institution in the Val-de-Marne or their research topic must be related to the Val-de-Marne. In 2012, the prize totalled 21,500 euros, to be divided among the winners.
