ENS Paris-Saclay

A multidisciplinary Grande École (university) for careers in research and higher education

ENS Paris-Saclay is a training and research centre with an international and multidisciplinary outlook. It offers students an early immersive contact with research and mobilises the laboratories in their training in basic sciences, humanities and social sciences, and engineering sciences.
The aim of the ENS Paris-Saclay Degree, which takes four years, takes ENS students to the level of a doctoral degree.

At ENS Paris-Saclay, research plays a central role. What sets it apart is that it links basic research to applications with a strong experimental approach.

By working with its partners to create the graduate school des métiers de la recherche et de l’enseignement supérieur (MRES) within Université Paris-Saclay, the École normale supérieure Paris-Saclay has provided, as part of its remit as an ENS, a remarkable setting to match contemporary issues.

11 teaching and research departments

Bringing basic sciences, engineering sciences, humanities and social sciences together

Its unique feature is to bring together disciplines in a way that no other higher education institution cis able to do at the same level: basic sciences, engineering sciences, humanities and social sciences.

The School includes ten teaching and research departments and a language department which cover a broad spectrum of disciplines associated with research laboratories,  the establishment of PhD track programmes for students and the interface of its research and training courses with the opportunities of Université Paris-Saclay.

This unique environment provides the opportunity for ENS students to receive research-intensive disciplinary training leading to Master’s and doctoral degrees.

14 laboratories and research institutes

ENS Paris-Saclay is a very active research centre with over 600 teacher-researchers and doctoral students. They work in 14 laboratories and 3 interdisciplinary research institutes which are recognised both nationally and internationally.

The laboratories

The laboratory activities are carried out within a multidisciplinary framework. This framework  constitutes the unique nature and the strengths of the School. It brings together in a single place high-level teams with wide-ranging of skills that are essentially dedicated to basic sciences and engineering sciences, to put it simply, the practical sciences.
As a member of Université Paris-Saclay,the School underlines its collaboration with the laboratories of the other partner institutions via an approach based on disciplinary decompartmentalisation and synergies around equipment and scientific and industrial subjects.

Interdisciplinary research institutions

Their aim is to decompartmentalise scientific research.

  • The D'Alembert Institute (IA) coordinates the research of the physics, biology, chemistry and applied physics laboratories around molecular photonics and its applications in the fields of information technology and biotechnology.

  • The Farman Institute brings together applied mathematics, computer science, mechanics, automated production, information and energy laboratories in the field of complex systems modelling, simulation and experimentation.

  • The Maison des sciences de l'Homme Paris-Saclay is a research project incubator in the humanities and social sciences across the Université Paris-Saclay.

The Research Stage provides a new space for exploring and sharing the great challenge of building bridges between the arts, sciences and society. It is at one and the same time a professional theatre and a platform for creation and research linked with the Education and Research Departments, embodying the high cultural and artistic standards of the School.

Throughout the year it offers a programme of rich, diversified events, together with course provision for the students - arts workshops, lectures, cross-disciplinary teaching units.

Collaboration with the industrial world

The School, in close collaboration with industry, conducts many high-level research programmes through initiating chairs and joint laboratories with companies in the aeronautics, aerospace, energy, automotive and IT sectors.  (Airbus, EDF, Atos, Hewlett-Packard etc.).

The School and its laboratories are involved in four competitive clusters in Île-de-France, as well as in many different international laboratories and research groups in India, Brazil, Japan, China and the United States.
